Why yourself, Fijians, and the earth are the only things you need

It’s common for people to be asked a heap of questions when they return home from their time on Vorovoro. Did you miss the a/c? Was it so hard not to have phone service out there? Aren’t you glad you can take a normal shower again? But when you’re on the island, not having all of these things makes the experience all the better. It connects you with yourself, the people and the land around you in a way you have likely never experienced before.

On the island, we have a solar panel for charging cameras/phones, composting toilets, and rainwater showers. You come to realize that this is more than enough. You don’t need or desire the facets of your Western lifestyle that you are used to.

When you’re there, you may be able to charge your phone, but there’s little service—this allows you to fully UNPLUG. You will find yourself not even wanting to look at your phone shortly after arriving on the island. You are able to be present with the people and the land surrounding you. That is what Vorovoro is all about—connecting yourself to your surroundings, being present, and rooting yourself in what truly matters in life.

There are no mirrors on Vorovoro. You spend each day interacting with the Fijians and other travelers, getting to know them and getting to know yourself. The lack of mirrors brings out the best in you. It allows you to interact without worrying about your appearance. It allows you to be your best self. You don’t worry about what you have to wear. You know that wearing t-shirts and sulus will be your attire for the majority of the day.

The time you spend on the island will be focused on learning about the land, about the culture, about the people, about yourself. Taking societal norms out of your daily equation allows you to experience life in a new way. A way that allows you to truly connect yourself to your daily experiences.

Doesn’t that sound amazing? Sustainable travel that sustains you: that’s Open Island 2018. Visit Vorovoro. Customize your experience. It’s the first time the island is open to visitors—a priceless experience at a very hospitable price. Find out more! Vorovoro is a place for you and your loved ones to fully connect.
